Replace Hard drives on Imac PDF Print E-mail

Look Ma, i fixed a mac.  Yes Mac's do break too eventually.  This one needed a new hard drive installed in it to bring it back to life since it was taking 15 minutes just to boot up.. thats a bad sign.  Hope you have a backup.  No problem.  We can do that.
It is a little challenging for most amateurs to open up an Imac and do basic things like changing a hard drive or a dvd drive or Ram.  Its all under the hood though.  First i removed the bottom four screws, removing a metal plate.  Then i had to find some special Torque Screwdriver bits to open the "special" screws and with a little more effort and some proprietary secrets, i was able to break this thing open and replace the hard drive.  Then i put it all back together again.  Yeah.   The next part involves the customer having the correct DVD's to install the MAC OSX operating system.  Hmmm, similair to installing Windows operating system.  But, before that is possible you have to figure out how to open the CDROM to start the install.  After all that, you have to partition the hard drive to work with the Mac. No more free hints.   Anyway, its difficulty level is about 8 out of 10 if you are not familiar with doing this type of work.  We don't do a lot of Mac work, but we have enough experience to do almost any project involving hardware and software, even a Mac.

If you need help with this type of project and you are not computer literate enough or dont feel like the challenge, please bring it in and ask for Jim.  I will be happy to help you out and probably be a lot cheaper than the Mac Store if they even do that type of work on an older model like this.   Most places would just tell you to buy a new one..  You dont always have to replace it if it can be fixed. Thanks for reading.

Is it safe to donate Your computer or sell to someone else? PDF Print E-mail

Be Careful about your data.  It is easy to recover data unless you have a DOD wipe of your drive first.

I had a job this week to backup two computers to get all the data from them so the computers could be donated to charity.  The customer was also concerned about their data, so we did a Special Wipe of the hard drive that leaves no traces of data to be recovered.  For the Do it yourselfer, you may try to format the hard drive.  However, This is no problem for an experienced computer tech to unformat or recover all the data including documents, pictures, music, bank information, bills, anything you might store on a computer and not want someone in Nigeria to get their hands on.  We can Wipe your hard drive to Department of Defense standards which basically writes 0's and 1's over and over your hard drive so that no data can be retrieved.  This takes many hours to run so we usually just let it go 24 hours.  We do this service at only $20 for the drive wipe..  If you want us to backup your data then wipe the drive, we charge $65 total and throw in the drive wipe at no extra.  Call Dimension Computer at 636-527-9660  or 314-729-0300 in Saint Louis about any of your computer questions. We don't charge anything for our advice.

If you get a message on your computer saying that you got infected with a virus or several virus, and you see a green or a blue icon that says Antivirus Security, and you can't get it to shut off or it wants you to pay for some program, don't do it.  This is a bad spyware program and it defeats most users with its annoying messages or it can also shut off your internet and it even shuts off almost all programs like malwarebytes, spybot, and antivirus programs like AVG, Norton, Mcafee, Avira, Avast, you name it. that you would normally try to clean it with.  You can spend many, many hours trying to figure it out yourself or just bring it in to us.  We have seen this one hundreds of times.  We can clean it out most of the time without wiping out everything else you have ever installed.  Its not a big deal for us.  WE do this type of work everyday.  Call today for a quote on this job.

PS. We can have you back in under 24 hours in most cases.  PS. WE are much cheaper than the Geeks...

Recently one of our customers got an email from UPS with an attached Zip file with an invoice.  They opened it and got a virus.  Just the other day i got an email from UPS with an attached Zip file, and another one from DHL with an attached ZIp file.  If you get one too, it probably is a virus.  Read this article for more information.  It is actually an old virus, but it is still popular. Remember don't open anything that you are not expecting.  And,make sure your antivirus is up to date.  http://tiny.cc/fn2ix
